ABC Developing Sitcom
Around Geico Cavemen
Joe Lawson, the ad copywriter behind the funny Geico ads, including the "Tiny House" reality-show spots, is developing his pissed-off caveman ads into an ABC sitcom!
From Friday morning’s Variety:
"Cavemen" will revolve around three pre-historic men who must battle prejudice as they attempt to live as normal thirtysomethings in modern Atlanta.
Jeff Daniel Phillips and Ben Weber, who play the two lead cavemen, are not yet signed to the sitcom.
If this turns into a hit, will our insurance rates go down?

» From 30 Seconds To 30 Minutes from AdPulp
The line between advertising and content becomes thinner by the day. Here's today's example from Variety. Winner for most unusual piece of development this pilot season goes to ABC, which has turned a series of quirky Geico commercials into an... [Read More]

Everything I need to know about advertising I learned from Star Wars
Damn, I just blogged this, too. I'm not too keen on this one. The commercials are funny. Phil Hartman as an unfrozen caveman lawyer is funny. But this smells of stink.

Knew this was coming. Very few people don't like the Caveman spots.
So this Lawson guy gets to get out of the trenches and work on a sitcom for a while. I'm jealous.

I think Seth may be onto something. SNL has amply shown that characters who are funny in 2-minute skits can't always carry a 2-hour movie.
But I'm rooting for the cavemen. How could you not?

It will stink if they have to dumb it down for the typical sitcom audience and add a laughtrack.

This is a step in the right direction. Joe Lawson's leading the way for creatives to stretch the creative beyond commercial breaks. Bud.TV, BK's xbox games and now this. Its exciting to see smart (read:entertaining) branded content.

I'm jealous, too. So is my friend the Jolly Green Giant, who's out getting pasted with Mr. Clean and the Brawny guy.

I hope this show doesn't suck. Yeah Jetpacks, I agree with you, this kind of thing doesn't always work out.

I love the Caveman spots. Makes sense those tiny house spots came from the same guy. But I can't get behind a tv series. I expect the joke will wear thin very quickly. Once it does, the tv spots will have to go.
I believe they're ruining a good thing.

Sure. Great. Nobody wants to give me a sitcom based on Tabby - the geometric Nokia brand standard. Stupid agencies with good clients. Bah!

I went to portfolio center with joe lawson, and we ended up at an agency in tampa together. if you know joe you'll root for the cavemen series to do well. good guy.
and i'm jealous too. mostly because i just had a good radio spot kilt and he's probably sucking on a mohito in santa monica.
