You're really right about mid-size agencies being ahead of the curve. For some of our clients, we're only doing interactive work, and when we sync up with their "traditional" agencies (this is, the "big" ones), we can't believe how completely fucked up some of them are in terms of process and creative thinking (or lack of creative thinking). I'm reminded of Jaffe's "beyond the 30-second spot" and how a lot of people still aren't thinking that way, even now.

The reason more creatives aren't in more commercials is two-fold:
1) It is against SAG rules and regulations (for those agencies and clients that are signator to SAG)
2) Many agencies also don't allow them to do it (because of SAG rules and the fact that they would be paid residuals, which would mean that they would be getting their salary and an actor's salary, which equals a LOT of money)

Just got around to listening. COngrats on 50. Can we say we knew you when?
As for other brand characters making the jump to sitcom, there was Alf and Baby Bob from Quiznos. Very limited precedent which doesn't bode well for the cavemen. Plus, if the sitcom is as well-written as the spots, it may be too clever for its good. Could be a critical fave and you know what that means–banished. People want LOL dumbass comedies at 8:00 pm, not witty and clever.
I'm still pulling for it though.

I think THE LINE when dealing with dead people in video is quite simple. If you've seen the person in a video, then it's off limits. We don't video footage of Lincoln, Washington, or T Roosevelt, so they work. But you've seen Hepburn, Chaplin, and John Wayne. Any attempt to reproduce or resurrect them for an add will seem artificial and risks being offensive.
