Prehistoric Product Placement

Watching VH-1's World Series of Pop Culture last night, I caught a glimpse of this. Wow. Just wow. It sells cigarettes with both misogyny and misandry. Nicely done. I like to imagine the absolute deluge of outrage this would cause if it ran today. I also like to imagine how the pitch went all those years ago:

The scene: A big boardroom. There's an ashtray for every seat around the table.

Man in Gray Flannel Suit: "So Fred and Barney are watching the women work."

Winston Exec: "I wish I could get my woman to work."

MIGFS: "That's a good one J.W."

WE: "Shut up J.G. Now, what happens?"

MIGFS: "Well, Fred and Barney go around back so they don't have to feel guilty about the women working.They take a Winston break."

WE: "I don't want people thinking our smokers are lazy."

MIGFS: "We thought of that. So, in the end, Fred and Barney choose to help the women out. We'll make sure they have big smiles on their faces, too."

WE: "As long as someone mentions our pure white filter. Who talks about the pure white filter?"

MIGFS: "Barney."

WE: "I don't want people thinking our smokers are short."

MIGFS: "He's sitting down when he says it."

WE: "As long as someone lights up and sings the jingle. Who sings the jingle? Not one of the women?"

MIGFS: "No, no. Fred does."

WE: "I don't want people thinking our smokers are fat."

MIGFS: "Well, he's lighting one up for Wilma. We don't want to leave people with the impression that Fred is a total oaf. This will appeal to both genders."

WE: "Let's talk more over lunch. I need a martini."

As you can see, ham-handed product placement is nothing new. It just seems new.
