A few weeks ago I received an invite to a friend's birthday bash in South Kansas City. Since I wasn't too familiar with where I was going, I was glad that the invite contained a link to an online map of the area. When I looked at the map, I instantly wondered why the map-makers had done what they did.
Any ideas?

One way streets? Maybe the street names are "pointing" in the direction of traffic.

Der. That makes sense.

Makes sense, but it's not the answer. Roe and Mission are also pointing opposite directions, but neither one is a one-way street.

I don't think there are one-way streets in Prairie Village. Weird.

Also, Seth, if you for one moment think that 67th and Roe is "South Kansas City," I hope you never get invited to a party at 127th, 151st or 199th and Roe.

Wouldn't that be called Olathe, KS, or even Oklahoma?

Having taken in my Montreal university years, a said "easy" elective cartography class, I can understand this as being an expression of artistic licence. Late nights, lead to inside jokes, kind of like the porn sprinkled into the film "Fight Club". There for those who care enough to care, awake enough to notice.

maybe they mixed it up to represent the diversity and variety of prairie village, kansas. yep, that has to be it.

I read an article about mapmakers actually driving the streets they map so they can program accurate directions.
So my guess is they drove up one street and down the next, probably keeping the map oriented northward as they made their notes.

Maybe a browser issue? On Safari 3.0 it looks not switcherrood- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=fontana+st+%26+w+67th,+kansas+city,+ks&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.224734,86.660156&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=addr&om=1

It's every other street right? Some designer thought it would help with the legibility if they alternated directions when there were groups of 5 or more.
or something.
LOL
